Trilogy Dominicana

In March 2007, Trilogy acquired 100% of a Dominican Republic wireless system, now known as Trilogy Dominicana, from Centennial Corporation. For the next twelve months, Trilogy overlaid and expanded the legacy CDMA with a new GSM network, strengthened the organization and revamped the commercial strategy. These efforts culminated in the April 2008 unveiling of Trilogy Dominicana’s new brand, Viva.

Market overview – The Dominican Republic occupies the Eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and has a population of approximately 9.4 million people. Its fixed line penetration of less than 10% is below average for Latin America. The Dominican Republic has had strong economic growth since 2005, with the help of strict fiscal targets agreed to in a 2004 renegotiation of an International Monetary Fund standby loan. In addition, the Dominican Republic benefits from a healthy tourism industry (3.4 million tourists annually) and is the 7th largest trading partner for the United States (the source of about 80% of the Dominican Republic’s export revenues). Today, the Dominican Republic is one of the fastest growing Caribbean economies. Although the economy continues to grow at a respectable rate, unemployment and underemployment remains high. The recent implementation of the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR) is anticipated to provide a benefit by boosting investment and exports.
